Crayke

And Surrounding Areas

We are situated in the historic village of Crayke, with breath-taking views over the vale of York on three sides, and a charming view up the hill to the medieval Church. Crayke is less than 25 minutes from York City Centre, and in the heart of Herriot Country.

About the area

Just outside Easingwold, we are well placed for visits to York, as well Helmsley and many beautiful surrounding villages and across to the North York Moors and Coast. There's much to do and explore from the Jorvik Viking Centre, The Railway Museum, York City Walls, Castle Howard, Beningbrough Hall & Gardens, Nunnington Hall (and many other National Trust properties in the area), Helmsley Castle, Byland Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and other stately homes and historic sites.

WALKS:  Many of our guests find the one minute walk from their room to the pub, perhaps twice a day, sufficient exercise for the duration of their stay!  However, we are surrounded by beautiful countryside to explore. There are a huge number of walks from gentle strolls to serious hiking.

"Nothing rounds off a Sunday stroll quite like a plate of Yorkshire beef with all the trimmings. With its prime spot between York and the North Yorkshire Moors, The Durham Ox, is just the place." As said by one of our guests!

A brief history of Crayke

A Roman watch tower may have been sited on Crayke hill in the 2nd Century A.D. and local excavations have produced evidence for a Roman settlement in the 4th Century.

Oak Panels

The oak panels in the main bar are late Victorian reproductions of medieval pew ends from St. Michael’s Church in Brent Knoll, Somerset.
